World Rat Day



Bibliographic Information: World Rat Day Poems about Real Holidays You’ve Never Heard of, by: J. Patrick Lewis, Illustrated by:  Anna Raff, Candelwick Press,2013, 36pp.

Reading Level: 4th grade

Synopsis: This is a hysterical book of poems written about real holidays one has never heard of.  It has poems for holidays throughout the year.  Some of the holidays that are included are: National Pig Day, Worm Day, World Turtle Day, And World Rat Day among others.

Rationale for Use:  I think this would be a great book to use as a read aloud in kindergarten to introduce poetry.  I think the children would enjoy it.  It could also be used when studying holidays.

Common Core Connection: RL.K.5 Recognizing common types of texts.  I would use this book to introduce poetry.
